Stewardship in the Stikine- Weeds Be Gone!
Wrangell Boyscout Troop 40 collaborates with the Souteast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC), Sitka Conservation Society (SCS), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), on a project to control an invasive weed infestation at Twin Lakes on the Stikine River. During the first year of the project, the group worked a collective 304 hours over six days to hand-pull reed canary grass along the lake shore. They also covered three areas with black plastic and posted notice of the project to educate those who use the area for recreation.
Through participation in this project, the boys are learning how to identify invasive weeds, and measures to control them. They are also gaining an understanding of the threat of invasive plants to Alaskan ecosystems and educate others about this threat. |
